Working at Home

Update Below!

I’ve become aware of a fellow Work at Home Mom going through a major crisis and I feel moved to do what I can to help. I wonder if you will help me help her?

alainaAlaina Frederick (@alainafrederick on Twitter) of Dinker and Giggles and her husband Marty have three children aged 5, 3, 1 years old. Alaina has been working to build a home business income for the last couple of years while Marty worked full time in an industrial supply warehouse. Altogether, they were doing ok.

This month everything changed – Marty’s back gave out with a pop and visits to the doctor revealed that he will need to have serious back surgery. He’s currently looking at 3-6 months to recover and then another 3-6 months of light duty which will prevent him from returning to his regular job.

Meanwhile – they are left trying to survive on Alaina’s very part-time income from her work as a blog content manager. Rent expenses have risen at the same time putting them in a desperate financial situation.

Alaina is working diligently to seek assistance and work to try to make ends meet but as of today the family is in a deep money quandary. They need to pay $600 in rent on the first of March plus they have utility/insurance bills due in the amount of $200.

At different times in the past I have shared about a WAHM’s financial struggle in a similar way. We raised over $1300 for a single mom and we raised over $800 for a mom who needed a new computer. I’ve been amazed at how wonderfully generous our community can be – and today I’m coming to you again, looking for another amazing act of kindness.

Would you dig deep and send Alaina and her family a cash gift to help them through this difficult time?

I have a personal goal of raising $800 for them by this weekend. If we could raise more than that to take pressure off of next month as well, that would be fantastic – we’ll just see how generous our wonderful work at home community can be – even in a tough economy :)

Please make your PayPal donation directly to alaina@dinkerandgiggles.com

  • I'm always so amazed at the generosity of the WAHM community. It always brings tears to my eyes and chills down my back to see/hear about our community pulling together to help someone. And I'll never forgot the time that the community pulled together to help me. I just sent a payment and while it's smaller than what I wish I could give I know that every little bit adds up and helps.

  • I think many people know their pain! My husband lost his contract at GM, and I too am a WAHM that does fundraising... doesn't pay money, but it pays great kharma bucks, right?

Anyway, I'd love to offer my fundraising services if they'd be needed!

  • I'm still in shock right now. I know more now than ever the amazing way that God works. Going from everything being okay and finally getting adjusted with my son having Autism and our other son having a tumor that was later diagnosed as non cancerous - it's been a roller coaster to say the least. We were finally starting to get our life in order then in a "pop of a back" life changed.

I really am blessed to be part of a community that cares and is there to support each other in the trials and the triumphs! My prayer is that my husband's heart is opened up to just how much God is helping us and opening the correct doors for us. It's so nice to have bills paid and that worry taken off of my shoulders.

Thank you Kelly, this was such an unexpected blessing - not just financially but spiritually as well. I was feeling very sorry for myself and wondering what we were going to do and then out of no where there you were and I got to just vent. It was great last night to have a cry fest for myself and let it all out and just give it all to God.

Thank you everyone who is even donating items for those that are helping us out! It looks like some great offers and I thank you for doing this. Words can not express what I am feeling right now - I'm sure many of you have felt what I am feeling and can relate to that utter speechlessness and shock.

    Thank You,

    Alaina & family

  • Just sent a little something myself.
  • I'm going to help if I can, but things are pretty tight here right now because my son has a $2000 dental surgery coming up in 3 weeks. We do have insurance, but we'll only get half that back after his surgery. Anyway, I'm going to see what I can do to spread the word and possibly set up a special offer to help raise money :-)

    Take Care!

  • I would like to offer anyone who makes a $50 donation a free sample of a diet appetizer cookie from Vitamark. Hope this helps a little bit. I am praying for this mom in these hard economic times for them. I just found your website and your radio show. I love it.
  • I'm going to send her something on Friday, but I really wanted to say that you're awesome Kelly, everyone is awesome.

I know what her husband is going through too, as I have a terrible back. I hurt my back in 1994 and it's never been the same. I can neither sit for long lengths of time nor stand for long lengths of time.

Thank you for this opportunity to help her.
  • I will be keeping Alaina and her entire family in my thoughts and prayers. I also made a small donation! It feels great to be able to give to others!!

Kelly - TY for sharing her story!
  • Hi Kelly:

This is such a wonderful thing you are doing. I'm praying fro Alaina and her hubby. I am also sending her a donation today.

Thanks for getting the word out. I tweeted your post and it also went through to my Facebook friends.

I pray that things turn around for them very soon.

    Blessings,

    Martha
  • It is so wonderful to see everyone's generosity. I will be sending a donation tomorrow (it's pay day) and sending them positive prayers. With a community like this behind them, they will pull through. Thanks so much for sharing Kelly and allowing everyone to come together for Alaina's family.

  • I`m always so impressed with the generosity of other moms! I don`t have a lot extra this month, but I`ll give what I can . . . every bit really does help. I think of these things as a pay it forward . . . when we were broke and my son needed surgery, dozens of people I never met chipped in a few dollars here and there and my baby was able to have his surgery in record time! Every little bit really does make a difference.

  • Glad to be a part of helping a fellow WAHM again, hopefully we can raise enough through the power of Twitter for several month's expenses!

  • I totally feel the pain of this story. My husband has been off work since November, about a week before thanksgiving. Fortunately, the company he works for offers disability so he get's half his salary even while he is out of work and recovering from his surgeries that he's had. (Just had his second surgery yesterday.) We've been very lucky that he hasn't been let go from his job during this time (which they can do... scary thought there)

Hopefully Alaina's hubby can get social security disability after his back surgery. I reviewed the application because it was suggested for my husband, but because he gets disability through work we don't qualify. Major surgeries like the one he's having and not being able to return to his job, especially if it's the type of job he's had for a length of time, he should be able to get at least a temp social security disability. Defintiely something to look into to help out with things. I think there's a waiting period for it though, so hopefully your efforts will pull together at least enough that they can handle their rent on the 1st of the month without having to go without something else, like groceries!

I cannot help much, but I pitched in $5 via paypal. I know that every little tiny bit helps in times like these. $5 is five steps closer to that rent payment on March 1st .... $5 could buy a gallon of milk and a loaf of bread one day, you know? So, if you're out there reading this frustrated and thinking "I don't have enough to help," remember every single dollar is something, it does help, and all those little dollars add up in the end.

Will definitely be thinking of Alaina and her family. Kudos to you for helping her in this trying time/
