I just read a very thought provoking post. It references a New York Times article about how hard some bloggers work and how the lifestyle may have led to the death of more than one well known blogger.
The article was sobering for Jennifer of Network Blogging Tips and for me as well.
This is a startling view of bloggers but it definitely runs deeper than that for our work at home community.
The story reminds of more than four years ago when one of my online business acquaintances had a serious heart attack. He wasn’t a blogger though, he was (and is) a very busy web host provider who spent crazy long hours at the computer. His life was spared but it definitely hung in the balance for a short time.
Any of us who spend long hours at the computer need to accept the wake up call that comes through a story like this. Would any one of us say that the work we do is more important than our health?
I do not want to be a future sad news story spread via Twitter and RSS feeds.
‘Kelly McCausey, WAHM Podcaster and Business Coach,
died of massive heart attack on Tuesday.
Long hours online and sedentary lifestyle blamed.”
My blood runs cold just looking at those words.
I love my work but I love myself and my family more.
I don’t spend long hours at the desk right now. The babies make sure of that ;) But my lifestyle is still very, very sedentary. I’m scared to even step on a scale to see how much weight I may have gained over this winter.
Time for a change - and not just time to ‘consider it’ - time to Do It.
Hold me accountable my friends. I’ll need it.

Our theme this week on Mom’s Morning Show is ‘Wordpress Blogging: Having Fun and Making Money.” We’re three days into our topic and have had a couple of great ‘guest crew members’ join us to share their experiences and expertise.
Lynette Chandler of Tech Based Marketing joined us on Monday to talk about the tech behind blogging and Wendy Piersall of eMoms at Home joined us today to talk about making money through blogging.
Wendy shared a tip that grabbed a lot of listener attention. She has a very involved Wordpress theme installed and making changes to a complicated layout can have unexpected consequences, even for experienced bloggers. She deals with this by having a shadow installation of the blog in another directory where she can made edits and check for problems before taking the change to the public blog.
What a great idea!
Listen to the archived shows here and be sure to join us when you can for the live show. We’re on from 10:30am to 11:30am EST Monday through Friday.
Upcoming Weekly Themes:
- February 17th-22nd - Creative Co-Promotion
- February 25th-29th - Bitterness and Boundaries: Making and Breaking Relationships in Life and Business

I am honored to be among those to receive the Ethical Blogger Award from Angela Wills.
Ethics are important to me. I do business honestly and with a high regard for the needs of others. It isn’t enough that an activity be profitably - it has to add value to our community and to the businesses of the moms I serve.
It grieves me to visit mom owned and operated websites and see every get rich quick scheme under the sun promoted but I know that for some, it is the dollar that rules their decisions, not the people who will be spending that dollar. In today’s world of fuzzy lines and greed… I appreciate that someone notices and wants to recognize positive ethics.
Thank You Angela.

Alice says I’m not blogging enough to keep her distracted and I think she’s just grumpy because Dr. Mani asked her too many questions - but I’ll take her meme and make the best of it
1. How long have you been blogging?
Here since March of 2005, on my old blog for about a year before that. I tried and puttered at a few blogs before that.
2. What inspired you to start a blog and who are your mentors?
I like to think in writing so blogging comes very natural. My mentors in the area of blogging? Well… there are quite a few blogs I follow and enjoy. I just did a show not too long ago where we chatted them up: Favorite Business Blogs.
3. Are You trying to make money online, or just doing it for fun?
Man, I could have written Alice’s answer. It is a very blurred line for me anymore. I have fun with my business and if I don’t have fun at something - I usually don’t do it for money.
4. Tell me 3 things you LOVE about being online.
- Connecting to friends
- Watching television shows whenever I want to
- Making money - of course!
5. Tell me 3 things you STRUGGLE with in the online world.
- I don’t like people who come on line and treat others like they aren’t real human beings.
- Compulsive spending. I am looser with a PayPal dollar than I am with a greenback in my purse.
- Making decisions about Social Networking sites - which to invest time in and which to let lie.
There we go
And I’ll work at blogging more so that Alice will have another excuse to be distracted!

Several times a week Sean (my homeschooled seventeen year old son) instant messages me (from the next room) to tell me he wants this or that gadget for his ipod or his xbox or his computer.
Since all of these gadgets cost crazy money, I reply with the standard ‘Get a job kid :)’.
In all truth, I don’t really want him to get a job working at some fast food joint when with some steady effort he could make as much online and avoid the inevitable smell of grease on his clothing.
I’ve been trying to get him to blog since he was about eleven without any success until this week… he comes to me and says ‘Mom, can you give me an affiliate lesson?’
(It’s a WAHM’s dream come true.)
You can catch his blogging at Listen With This.
