Ten Quick Thoughts About Creativity

by Kelly on March 16, 2008

1.  Everybody has a little creativity even if they think they don’t.

2.  Some people aren’t nearly as creative as they think.

3.  Creativity is more likely to come when you’re rested.

4.  Sometimes you think you’re being creative and you’re just being distracted.

5.  Some distractions lead to creativity.

6.  Creativity can’t be forced but should be fostered.

7.  Children are amazingly creative.

8.  Grown ups are notorious creativity killjoys.

9.  You don’t always have to act like a grown up.

10.  When you’re running low on your own creativity, you can borrow someone else’s.  It’s called brainstorming ;)

I had an epiphany today while spending an hour or so catching up on blog feeds on my Blackberry.

There are a lot of blogs I’ve added to my reader in the past three or four months that focus on ‘new media’ and ’social networking’ because everyone talks about how important these topics are and everyone says that these bloggers have a lot of important things to say on the issues as they relate to our businesses.

I’ve monitored these blogs and I’ve read thousands and thousands of words on the subjects of ‘new media’ and ’social networking’ - enough to fill a few books I’m sure.

My epiphany today?

Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah…..

Oh, and BLAH!

Enough already. I’ve heard enough! All the words these people are spewing in this frenzy to gave something to say aren’t adding anything of value to my business.

‘New Media’ means nothing. It’s just a buzz term that refers to a lot of stuff we were already doing and I’m bored with it. (Not bored with doing it, bored hearing people talk about it.)

‘Social Networking’ is fabulous - but I can better spend my time SOCIAL NETWORKING than reading all the ‘blah, blah, blah’ about it.

So, I just swept the ‘blah, blah’ out of my reader. My time and attention can be better used elsewhere.

Edited to add:

Ok, I know that there a lot of folks out there who haven’t been podcasting and blogging and taking advantage of social networking and they need to hear about it.  So I’m not saying people should stop talking about it.  That really isn’t the message of this blog post at all.

The moral to my story is that I realized I was wasting time trying to keep tabs on something that I didn’t need to keep tabs on.

What do you waste time trying to ’stay informed’ about?

Tell Me Thursday: Get Your Own Paperweight!

by Kelly on February 21, 2008

Following up on yesterday’s Wordless Wednesday, here is my Tell Me Thursday.  The little seat that precious Willow is hanging out in on the desk is a Bumbo Seat.

It’s the coolest invention and all of my niece’s quads really enjoy sitting in one.  As you can see, it can be placed anywhere that you want to let baby hang out with you and not worry about them tipping over.  For a desk dweller like me, it’s a great way to get a few things done online!

Want one? Check out this website.
