Working at Home

What is all the buzz about this week?  We are all buzzing about LaTara Ham-Ying – and she is a master at creating buzz!  LaTara is the Social Savvy VA, and she loves helping business owners harness social media to expand their reach online.  This is a must-have component to any WAHM business, but, honestly, who has the time?  I was excited to dig in and find out more about how LaTara does it all, and how she can help us.

LaTara, could you tell us about your family and how you came to be a WAHM?

lataraI have been married for 6 1/2 years and I have 2 boys ages 17 and 5, 5 step children ages 16 to 27 and step-grans from ages 3 to 12. I currently live in Oklahoma helping my oldest prepare for his Senior of school. I became a WAHM after getting married and deciding to stay home and homeschool my kids. I could never be satisfied with just being a mom who stayed home but I did not want to leave my kids either. So I started working online in 2004 as a writer for a Christian online publication. From there I went on to some stuff that did not work because I did know what the heck I was doing. I met Kelly soon after and with her help and my membership with Mom Masterminds I started creating some streams of income from home.

Your are the “Social Savvy VA.”  How can you help a work-at-home mom create a social media presence for herself?  Why is that important?

It varies but since most of my clients are people with little or no idea about increasing their online presence, let me start from that point. When I work with a client I look at what they are currently doing as far as social media to get their message to their target audience. I also consider the social media platforms they like best and why. From there we determine if they are hitting the right market and how they can advance in their efforts to do so. We then tweak what she doing, create a Wordpress site (if needed), work on her social media profiles, copy, etc. so that when the market finds her, she is saying what they need to hear. So in essence what I do is help the client to get in where she fits in with a plan of action.

What do you think are the keys to success for a work-at-home mom?  How do you manage a successful business and a busy family?

Keys to success. That is funny considering that I one time I was the poster child for “what not to do when you start an online business”; but I think I may be able to answer that.

  1. The first key for me is my faith foundation. Having a foundation rooted in the right way makes a huge difference.

  2. Another key is planning and pacing. When you make your plans don’t lump the action dates all together. Take your time and know that rushing will only produce mediocre results; but taking your time produces lasting quality results.

  3. This key is so important. Don’t think that the money will rush in overnight. When you are trying to make a name for yourself and your product/service it takes time to see the fruit of your labor. Don’t labor and expect the tree to grow overnight with branches filled with ripe fruit.

  4. Find a coach who you can work with to hold you accountable and help you create action steps and goals that are attainable for you to reach.

  5. Read books, find mentors and business buddies who can help you stay motivated, inspired and encouraged.

I manage my family and business by utlizing the talents and skills of people I am surrounded by. My mother does most of the cooking ( I cook about two days out of the week), my oldest son is good with my youngest, I run errands on certain days of the week, I outsource to my VAs, and I stay very very prayerful and grateful to God for keeping my family grounded and in love with each other.

  • I definitely think taking it one step at a time and not expecting everything to happen overnight is key. Also, getting a mentor and buddies to help encourage you and keep you on your path is important.

  • I think it's great to hear her say get a coach for support & accountability. I can see how that would be so helpful! And when I finally figure out WHAT I'm doing, that will be one of my next steps!
