Working at Home

For this week’s Buzz a Mom feature, the Moms Talk Network Interns interviewed Alyssa Avant – a Christian WAHM, writer, speaker, information product creator and now membership site owner.

Alyssa works with mothers and daughters to improve relationships and foster their spiritual paths. I interviewed Alyssa about how she manages to mix Ministry with business tactics, which she does very successfully!

alyssa09You have been a Christian your whole life, how did that impact your decision to start your WAHM business?

I actually was led to start working from home as a part of taking a “leap of faith” to pursue ministry outside the walls of the church, full time with my ministry to tween and teen girls and their moms, Beauty by Design Ministries, and it is because of this “calling” on my life that I took the step to become a WAHM.

Your market, Christian women and the micro-niche Christian mother and daughter relationships, are obviously subjects you are hugely passionate about. How did you get started and did you ever wonder if it was possible to make a business out of your passion?

It actually started as a speaking ministry to girls and their moms, however when I came home to do this full time I realized I was going to have to monetize it in other ways to truly make it work for me and my family. After doing a ton of research and seeking out the advice of other WAHMs who were already making a success of working online I found ways to do so as well.

How do you to mix ministry with business tactics? Have you had any challenges when trying to do so?

Mixing ministry with business tactics was definitely something I struggled with for a long time. But after having mentors, coaches and others who I trusted tell me over and over again that this was my “job” and I should get paid for it I finally took that to heart. That’s when I realized I had to market my ministry just like it was a business. Now I mix the two all the time, you have to know when to do so and when not to. It is a fine line.

Do you have any advice or tips for moms wanting to start a faith-based home business?

Sure, realize that you will have to treat it somewhat like a business in order for it to be profitable. Be comfortable with that and always check your heart to make sure it is in the right place.

As a WAHM with several young children, how do you get it all done in a day? What are your secrets?

The truth is I do NOT get it all done in a day. I juggle things like crazy. I multitask. I set a short list of “to dos” that I want to get done and I check them off as I go. I know my and my kids limits and I try to be ok with that, even if it means I don’t get AS MUCH done as I would like on a given day.

You are going to be launching a membership site this week – how exciting! What do we need to know about your new site? Please give us all the details.
