Can you spam keyword research tools?

Working at Home

Ok, this may seem like a really weird question but I just ran across some really weird results while doing some keyword research using the overture keyword research tool.

I wanted to see how people search for ‘free advertising’.  And this is the list I got:

The highlighting is added by me.

I didn’t fall off the turnip truck yesterday.  I know that a website that was just started this summer hasn’t generated 5000+ domain specific searches for specific keyword phrases in one month.

So the question is – do you think this guy actually purposefully spammed the keyword research tools?  Or would there be some other reason to generate all those searches?  How will it benefit him?

The first thought that comes to my mind is that he’s doing it simply to get his domain in my face while I’m doing my keyword research thinking that someone who is searching for free advertising related stuff might be interested in what he has to offer.

Or was he trying to show up on some buzz list somewhere?

Isn’t this likely to get you in trouble with the search engines?

I’m sure he automated something in order to do this but it still seems like a pretty dumb thing to spend any effort on.

  • I've seen this before too. I'm sure it was done on purpose.
