Working at Home

Christie IngramToday I am continuing my cross-blog conversation with Christie Ingram of the blog Work At Home Mom Hacks (and former intern right here at WAHM Talk Radio!).  We are chit-chatting about topics related to working at home, and if you need to catch up on the conversation so far read Christie’s last post.

Question from Christie: With so much on the go, how do you prioritize what you need to get done in a day?  How have you fit being the WAHM Talk Radio intern into your life with your family and VA business?  What does being a WAHM important to you? And lastly, any advice for a new, sleep deprived WAHM;)

Oh, Christie, I remember so vividly those first sleep-deprived months!  My kids are 5, 2, and 1 now, but I will never forget what being a new mama is like!  I can only pass along two pieces of wisdom: sleep when your baby sleeps, and remember that it WILL get better!  (Does anyone else have good advice?)

As for how to fit work into an already-busy life, I used to be able to work during nap times, evenings and on weekends.  Now my schedule changes from day to day, and my chunks of time are a lot shorter.  I am sure that is the case with many moms! So I absolutely LOVED your recent post Nicole Dean says Cue Cards Rock.  Nicole Dean is an internet marketing mentor of mine as well.  Her advice is to plan your work to-do list the day before while it is fresh in your mind, and so you can immediately jump in and be productive.  Then, only after you have tackled your most important money-making tasks, you can check email or Twitter.  This shift in approach is so simple and so brilliant!

So my next question to you Christie is this: Who are your WAHM mentors?  What blogs or books do you read?  Are you involved in any forums?

  • Angie, I have to say that Nicole's cue card system is working so well for me, I can't believe it is so simple! Great post and I am working on my response right now. :)
  • Great stuff, Angie! Learning to prioritize takes practice - and lots of good advice. =)

New mom needs sleep? You're right - sleep when baby sleeps and remember it will get better. My advice? ASK FOR HELP. If you get to the point that you aren't getting enough sleep (and every new mom needs more) - ask for someone you trust to come spend a day with you & your baby so you can sleep a little longer. When baby needs fed, you can get up - but having someone else you are comfortable with provide some presence and support can really give you peace of mind and better rest.
