I did a Google search today for the term “Work at Home Mom Blog”, just curious to see who came up in the top 10 – the first page of Google. I was happy to see that Work At Home Mom Talk Radio blog is on the front page – woo hoo! But also on the front page is what can be considered spam blogs.
Spam blogs or “splogs” can be spammy in many ways. Some contain stolen content, some contain garbage/computer generated articles to fool the search engines and in others, the “author” (and I use the term loosely) writes her articles with very little content, so that the reader will click on an ad to get the information they are searching for.
Believe it or not, put some people put up hundreds of fake blogs a day, just for the sake of getting some clicks on their ads or Adsense. This is especially true in a market that is has a high payout for keywords like “insurance” and “credit cards”. Some people will use free blogging sites like Blogger to create these splogs, and others will buy domains and use WordPress.
The most frustrating thing about these splogs is when one steals your content, that you worked really hard on, and puts it on the splog, passing it off as their own. Grrrr. Check your market every month of so to see if any blogs list your content. I know a few people in a highly competitive market that create a Google Alert for some of the phrases in an article to see if anyone has “lifted” the content. If it happens to you, send an email citing their copyright infringement to the site owner and if you aren’t getting anywhere, send an email to that site’s web host.
If you have a blog and you have to compete with splogs in your market, the best way is to keep doing what you are doing – providing great content to your readers. As they say, Content is King or perhaps Queen – ha! Google loves sites that add new, fresh content all of the time, and that is exactly what blogs do. So keep writing your killer content, post often and get as many backlinks as you can. The Google algorithm will eventually catch up with those splogs and they will lose their ranking, while yours will continue to grow.
