One of the most important reasons working at home is so important to me is I want to be around for my baby and deal with “life issues” as they come up. And we all have life issues if you work outside the home, are a SAHM or a WAHM. If you are not having any issues in your life, you are probably buried in the cemetery! Because as they say “life happens”, well some say something else happens, but let’s keep this family friendly, shall we? ;)
I have had a lot of “life” happening in the last week, nothing I can’t handle, but just enough to throw a wrench in to many days. As you may know, we are expecting a baby sometime in May, but do to a very annoying autoimmune disease I have, pregnancy is very, very dangerous. Our amazing friend who I will call M offered to be our gestational surrogate (our bun, her oven) and it has been quite the journey.
In the last couple of weeks, M has developed gestational diabetes which we (as in the royal we – ha!) are having trouble keeping under control even with insulin injections. She also has pre-eclampsia (pregnancy induced high blood pressure) which makes things a bit more concerning. So we are having many doctors visits, ultrasounds at the hospital and non-stress tests plus visiting the diabetes clinic a lot. Nothing horrendous that Team Baby can’t handle, just enough to add some stress to our lives.
I was speaking to a man considering surrogacy, I am a great reference for our clinic as I give the straight goods, so I talk to other people thinking about surrogacy a few times a week. This particular gentleman also works from home and he asked me if I thought he should get a job at a company so he wouldn’t be “distracted” by all of the potential appointments and other things that would be involved. Distracted? I really tried hard not to laugh! Life and distractions are going to hit you up no matter where your place of employment is. Pregnancy is a GIANT distraction! And from what I have read/heard … that is the tip of the iceberg! Life as I know will be over and I say “bring it on”!!!
I have been to every medical appointment, every ultrasound, every single thing connected to this pregnancy. I have also been able to support my friend who is giving us this amazing gift. I take her grocery shopping, run errands with her and just chat on the phone every day. I get to feel my baby girl kicking a few times a week :) I can’t imagine any corporation supporting their employees in that regard. The only boss who would give me that kind of time off is ME.
Work at Home Parents are so lucky to be able to deal with “life” stuff at the time it happens. I feel so blessed that I will be able to be there when my baby will need me whether she be a baby or 28. How do you feel about “life distractions”? Are you glad you work for the best boss in the world and can take time when you need it?

I just wanted to say that I appreciate this post. I have been having some “life issues” lately and I am very glad that I have been able to be at home. I am still working on the whole making money from home, (I just finished my book about my son) and I am so glad that I have been able to be there for my kids when they need me. It truly is a blessing to have that chance and I think I have needed it as much as they have.
