Getting Ready For Opportunity

Have you seen this little equation before:

Preparation + Opportunity = Success

I’ve seen the validity of this statement in my own life, both personal and professional.

Opportunity will knock. It always does.

Knock Knock.

Who’s There?

Opportunity!

Woohoo! Opportunity Who?

“Opportunity to quit the day job and work for yourself.”

Sweet! Tell me more!

It’s a chance to take your existing skills and apply them to a freelance position with big potential – but you’ll have to take a cut in pay to start out.

Oh darn… I’m in debt up to my eyeballs, I can’t handle a cut in pay.

But the potential here is huge. If you prove yourself it will likely turn into even better pay a year down the road.

I know… but, I’m just not in a position to…

Ok, going to go knock somewhere else now.

How many people reading this blog today is hungry to quit the day job and stay home full time, but is carrying too much debt to suffer a cut in pay even for a short period of time? I’ve certainly been there. During the first four years of my home business, the income it generated was funneled to pay off debt. Once that was cleared up, I realized I could quit my day job – and DID!

If debt is cramping your style – do something about it! Quit treating yourself to those little extras and pay down your bills instead. You don’t really need that McDonalds and you certainly don’t need those cute new shoes. You need to be ready when opportunity knocks!

Knock Knock

Who’s There?

Opportunity!

Cool! Opportunity Who?

“Opportunity to bag a big new client, she just needs you to be familiar with (fill in the blank with some current technology)”

Oh darn… I really want that big new client, but I haven’t taken the time to learn that yet.”

Ok, going to go knock on your competitor’s door now…

My friend is a dental hygienist. Do you know that they have to go to ‘continuing education’ classes every now and then to stay up to date with modern science and training? I wouldn’t think that scraping the plaque off of my teeth would be that complicated, but apparently it is.

We also need to keep up to date on current trends and tools that will help us in the know. Customers and clients expect us to know more about our field than they do.

You can probably think of several more ‘Knock Knock’ situations that would apply to your business. Got a good one? Share it in a comment below!

  1. Very good post, Kelly. I see this a lot in my market. They claim they want a job from home and are willing to do anything to get it, but then they find any reason why they can’t take the job. It often baffles my mind.

Opportunity to become a successful service provider if you make some calls and put feelers out and respond to that person’s request for help RIGHT NOW!

Oh…I’d love to, but I have to learn how to make my own webpage, design my own business cards, set up article marketing, have an elevator speech, get client materials, design a brochure and write a five year business plan…

Um…I’ll go talk to the business owner with the paypal account and desire to work *now*….

jennydecki’s last blog post..Early adopter? What does that mean, anyway?
