Working at Home

In my last post I gave some tips for starting your work at home business and the first tip was to set a goal date for when you want leave your J.O.B. One of the replies was, “After you come up with a goal of when you want to leave the J.O.B., I think the hard part is how to achieve that goal.”  I think you’re absolutely right, Mimi, so I’m going to give you some practical, realistic ways to achieve your goal of working from home full time.

First of all, I think we get so excited about working from home full time that we forget it takes time to build our businesses, and if we’re not making money right away, we tend to get discouraged. Once that discouragement sets in, we tend to get off track and lose sight of our goal. Other things that might make us lose sight of our goals are lack of planning, not meeting our business expectations, setting our goals too high or too low, family emergencies and other financial setbacks.

Set Realistic Goals

The first thing to remember when setting your goal date to be working from home full time is to make sure it’s realistic. Don’t set it so close that there’s no way you’ll be able to reach it. This will cause discouragement and perhaps even stop you from going after your dream all together. A reasonable goal date is going to be different for each individual person, based on your current income, your income goals and what type of work at home business you’re going to start. So, don’t set a goal based off of what someone else has done, unless of course they have close to the same circumstances as you.

If you’re not sure what a realistic goal date is for you and the type of business you’re going into, get some One on One Coaching with Kelly McCausey . She will be able to help you determine a reasonable time frame for building your business and reaching your income needs for working at home full time.

Keep your Goal in front of you at all times

Of all the goal setting seminars I’ve attended and classes I’ve taken, the one thing those gurus taught me was to keep your goals in front of you at all times. You can do this any number of ways, and you can do what works for you. Some folks use a “vision board” which is basically a cork board or magnetic board where you post pictures or other visual stimuli of your goal. Since we’re talking about a date, you could write that date out on bright colored paper, circle it in red on a calendar and leave your calendar turned to that month, or even take a picture of you in your home office and write the goal date in black marker over it. Having it in front of you at all times will remind you why you’re working so hard right now and help keep you from getting discouraged.

Work Toward your Goal Every day

Working toward your goal every day is probably the most difficult to do because you may not always be sure what activities are going to produce the best results. This is why getting the best training, advice and coaching is so important. There are thousands of people who have started some type of business or another, but failed to invest in it. Any business worth starting is worth investing time and money into. If you are serious about working from home full time, then you must invest in it.

There are so many resources available to you, literally right at your fingertips. Here are the ones I recommend that have truly helped me reach my dream of working from home:

  • Great post Mary! It was such a DIFFICULT transition from full-time J.O.B. to full-time home and I'm still not "launched" as a WAHM. It's something I keep praying about and am trying to learn more about. The Blog Internship was a HUGE part of my WAH education - and I think your points about GOALS are right on!

Thanks Mary for the great advice. I will make sure I visit the Mom Masterminds more regularly.
  • Thank you for discussing goals. After listening to Totally Free Tuesday I didn't realize how beneficial setting the goal to WAHM FT really was.
  • I've read about it, heard about it, thought about it but not done it. I'm going to create a visual of my goals. Thanks for motivating me to action.
  • Mary,

Great tips. Goals not kept in front of you will soon move behind you. Most get to work without realizing what they're working toward. With no direction, it's impossible to focus. Factor in the excitement of working at home for the first time and you have a recipe for mental chaos and failure.

I also use vision boards. I meditate, affirm, and visualize throughout the day. The mental homework is as important as the physical work because you will proceed according to what's happenining in your mind.
