Working at Home

mesmallHi, my name is Mary Lutz and I am blessed to be an intern here at WAHM Talk Radio.  As you probably read in a previous post, Erin had a family crisis and had to step down from the internship. Please keep Erin and her family in your prayers.

A little about myself, eh? Well, I am a mother of four children, ages almost 26 to 17, so I’m out of the diapers and going into the empty nest stage. Well almost. My oldest daughter has 2 boys, ages 3 and 1, and my oldest son has his first child on the way. I absolutely love being Nana, and as so, my house now has toys, high chairs and strollers once again, but I wouldn’t trade it for the world!

I am also very happily married to an amazing man named Jeff, who is a meteorologist for the National Weather Service. We have been married 4 years and I can’t imagine life without him. He is an amazing step-dad to my kids and Papa Jeff to the grandkids.

Now that you know a little about my personal life, onto business!

Back in the Winter/Spring of 2008, I was temporarily laid off from my bookkeeping job at a small charter aviation company due to the slow economy. During that time off, I began pursuing my dream of working from home. My good, personal friend, Tishia Lee (Kelly’s VA) had begun working from home several years earlier and I had been longing to do the same, but wasn’t sure how to get started or what to do. With the new freedom I had gained from not having to work 9 to 5 every day, I began researching starting a virtual assistant business.

My work history gave me the skills necessary to start a virtual assistant business, but I wasn’t sure what services I wanted to offer. I knew I could do a variety of things like database set up and management, desktop publishing, bookkeeping, and so on, so that’s what I started out offering to my potential customers. But, that’s not really where my heart was, and I wasn’t getting any clients.

Shortly after getting my website/blog set up, I heard about this thing called Twitter, so I decided to check it out. I began “tweeting” and one of my first followers was Kelly. Kelly put out a tweet introducing me, and soon I began connecting with these amazing work-at-home moms. I truly admired how successful they were in their businesses and wanted what they had…freedom to work at their own pace, freedom to be their own boss and freedom to set their own schedule.

Kelly also asked me to write for Profitable Mommy Blogging, under the category “A-Z Internet Terms”. I was thrilled and blessed to be writing for her new blog…and it was my first paid writing job!

Also around that time, I joined Mom Masterminds and made even more connections with successful work-at-home moms and others who were building their business as I was. I did have to return to work, but they could only afford to pay me for one day a week, which left me lots of time to build my business. One day, while on Twitter, I was asked by the assistant to a highly successful Internet Marketer if I would like to write for one of her sites. I was so excited! I had been blogging on my personal blog since 2004, built my VA site and was writing for Kelly, but didn’t consider myself a “writer”. As a matter of fact, I didn’t know that I even liked to write. That IM saw my posts on her site and loved my writing style, so she put me on her team, and I finally began making some money working from home!

A couple of weeks later, I was asked to write for another successful Internet Marketer and was put on her team as well. Somewhere along the way, I knew my “calling” was as a writer, and I discovered I love to write as well. As I’ve journeyed down this path, I changed the services I offered and began specializing in writing. I’ve been hired by many successful Internet Marketers who need articles, blog posts, ebooks and ecourses written for their business or to sell on their content sites.

Since I’ve been so busy with that, I haven’t taken the time to really focus on and build my blogging business. I’ve started two other blogs as well, but I feel they aren’t “focused” enough. That is why I’m so blessed and excited and to be the new intern here at WAHM Talk Radio and I’m ready to take my business to the next level with the help of Kelly.
