Is Now the Time to Start a Business?

In case you have been living under a rock, the world’s financial markets kinda fell apart.  Do you have any room under that rock for me?  It sounds like a nice, safe place.  Everyone is scared, agitated and stressed.  What a perfect time to start a business!  I am serious, it is a great time to start a business, especially a home-based one, and I am not the only lunatic that thinks so.

CNNMoney.com has a great article about defying the recession to start a business.  Business Week talks about starting a business in a downturn.  USA Today says it’s a good time to start a business, really.  My inbox has been flooded with internet marketing promising programs and tools so I make money during the recession.

I think it is a great time to start a WAHM business, especially if you want to work on the internet.  Why?  Low start up costs.  Chances are you already have a computer and an internet connection.  A domain and a webhost are really pennies now (especially if you go with Mom Webs) and that is pretty much all you need to start.  There has never been such a low-entry point to jump into business for yourself.  In a few short hours you can have yourself a site, and start making immediate money by hitting up Elance or Guru.com

Businesses still need services provided and consumers still need products to buy.  Sure maybe people aren’t spending frivolously, but we aren’t all going to be living on communes either.  In a downturn, there is going to be less competition (fewer people starting businesses) and since you don’t have any overhead, you can offer attractive (not cheap though, you need to be paid what you are worth) prices.  The great thing about being small is you can turn your business in a different direction quickly if you find that is where the market is taking you.  Big, lumbering corporations don’t have that luxury.

With an official email address and a Skype account, you can compete with the big boys, and no one has to know you are at home in your jammies with your bunny slippers on.  Not that I would do that, I don’t have bunny slippers.  But I am sporting some rocking Socks N Crocs. Ok and jammies.  ;)

So don’t let the economic fears stop you from reaching your WAHM dream.  Plenty of really successful businesses were launched in downturns, so you might as well join us!

Are you nervous about starting or expanding your business?  Or do you have a success story from the last recession?  Tell us in the comments!

  1. I so agree with you. I think now is definitely the time to start working on a business. You don’t have to quite your job right away, but if it burns in you to start a business do it.

  2. Now is a great time to start a business from home. You can do so much with social networking and interacting with colleagues – making marketing a lot more affordable. Plus you save on gas, eating out for lunch, and get to do what you love. Our webtop also makes it easy to access several SaaS programs and even save your files online – an additional backup in case something happens to your computer. And since the webtop lives on the Internet, you can access it from anywhere – your laptop, your client’s desktop, or even your mobile phone!
