Some of my friends were sure that I had lost my mind back in June when I announced that my print mini-magazine would be free after almost a year of selling it by subscription.
Heck – I wondered if I’d lost my marbles.
That was a huge decision and a big risk for me financially. And I’m so glad I did it :) The WC is jetting all over the continent as I type this, reaching one thousand, six hundred and forty nine Moms for the August issue. That is pretty exciting isn’t it?
The WC is set up to be advertiser supported now instead of subscriber supported. I have plotted out great advertising space in every issue and have priced the ads to cover our production and shipping expenses. I am really pleased with how it all works out. The cost per exposure on the best spot (our back cover) is only seventeen cents!
That means your full page back cover ad reaches 1700+ moms in their own homes for only seventeen cents each. That is wild! Cheaper than a postcard even. Other display ads are even more affordable.
I have so much confidence in the value of the advertising in The WC that I made another huge decision today.
If you were to ask me which is better… an ultra targetted display ad in our mini mag or an ultra targetted banner/button ad on our website – I would have to go with the mini mag ad. Reaching your target market ‘in their hands’ in a format that they are likely to keep and refer to again and again – is very attractive.
There’s nothing wrong with banner and button advertising – it has it’s place though many admit that they pay little attention to them while surfing the web.
Since I believe this to be true… my big decision is that we are no longer accepting new advertisers here at Work at Home Moms Talk Radio
That’s right. You can’t buy a banner and you can’t buy a button. You can’t even buy a commercial spot on the show. Can’t be had for any price :)
What you can do is purchase a great ad in The WC Mini Mag and when you do – I’ll throw in valuable extra exposure in the form of a text link on the main page of WAHM Talk Radio. (We’ll have a box set up just to feature and thank The WC advertisers for supporting Work at Home Moms.)
What do you think? Am I a nutbar or what? LOL!

Kelly,
I think you are a genious. You are asking the people with money to support your magazine with ad dollars. They get valuable exposure that can’t be blocked by spam filters.
The readers get great valuable free information.
And the 1, 2 punch of offering the text link on WAHM talk radio is great!
I think you are onto something here!

Very very cool! It’s so true… I read each word of the WC, including the ads. :)

I definitely read the ads in the WC. I figure, the people who are advertising there are serious about their business and are worth looking into.
However, I think I’ve become button-blind because I rarely look at a row of buttons or banners anymore since they are everywhere…
Good call, Kelly.
