As is usual with most free ‘promotional’ tools – the ‘Plug Board’ has taken the Work at Home Mom Community by storm. I’ve heard the term used on forums but today I found one pasted on the main page of a website and it stopped me up short.
It was flashing and twinkling and had several dead image ‘x’ marks on it. (See image)

I blurred the images to protect the innocent ;)
If you have ever taken our free audio course, The Truth about Traffic, you know that I am not a fan of link farms, top sites lists, button swaps, web rings, etc. I’ll have to now add the plug board to the list.
A plug board is surely fun – trading little images between friends is fun! I could see something like this on the side of a personal blog and it would be great.
But on a business website – on the main page? That’s not a great idea.

I’ve never even heard of a plug board!
And WHY would all of that be on the main page! Wrong, wrong, wrong.
LOL! I know where this is and when I saw it I immediately thought of you Kelly. I’m not kidding. I think you talked about this type of thing on your show and when I saw the site I thought they had some good stuff but they loss credibility with me when I ran into the ‘plug board’ and excessive banners on the main page! There’s definitely potential but they seriously need to read the Truth about Traffic especially 7 Deadly Website Sins.
I’ve never seen one before either, but searched around and saw some very flashy ones.
I’m confused. So, you can add to another site’s plug board and you should have a plug board on your site in return? And you as new plugs get added, olds ones drop off?
Hmmm…maybe there are better ways to spend our time. Maybe playing with our kids, shopping, hanging out with friends or spending time with our signicant others. It would be more enjoyable and probably adds the same amount of profit to an online business.
And is it like a web ring, where you’re expected to have it on your home page? Bizarre.
You aren’t expected to have them on your main page. I don’t recommend anyone add it to their main page. But adding it to a links page or even a plug board page is ok if listed on the right website.
I have one on my http://www.PrimDoodles.com website and it brings in a TON of traffic for that site. Since my only income on that site comes from adsense, any visitors to that site are fine with me and mean more money if they click. My webtraffic shows that they do so it’s worth it to me to have one.
So they can work. Just like I believe TopSites can work. It’s all a matter of if it’s right for your website and you use them right!
Just my 2cents! :)
