Working at Home

bigstockphoto_freephoto-stop_sign_31062Per-fec-tion-ism: a personal standard, attitude, or philosophy that demands perfection and rejects anything less.

Is perfectionism getting in your way of success?

It has definitely been in the way of mine. And I don’t mean I do everything perfectly and I lose sleep over improperly folded sheets!

I am talking about a deep desire to have to do everything so perfectly that you won’t even start something until you research every little thing you could ever possibly need to know about a topic. You feel YOU are not good enough, know enough to put up your site, write your eBook, start your company, etc., etc. Research paralysis.

I used to wonder why and how I got so off track everyday – was I scatterbrained? Did I have ADD? What was wrong with me?

Eventually I realized it was my perfectionism that was getting in the way of my success and I was not going to let that happen anymore. It is not easy to change your mindset you have had for a long, long time, but with deliberate thoughts and work, you can.

I am slowly learning that everyone started out a newbie, and it is beneficial to make mistakes. You can’t learn if you don’t make mistakes. You don’t expect your child to tie their shoes perfectly the first time you show them how, so give yourself as much leeway. And like Nike says – Just Do It!

Every Monday morning at 10:30 EST, come and attend Kelly’s Breakthrough Sessions (follow Kelly on Twitter for more information) to get motivated and pumped for the week. I have gotten so much from these Monday morning sessions, not only is it a fabulous way to start the week, but I have seen that others struggle the same way I do, we have the same challenges, fears and desires.

I have also gotten great advice, last week Lynette told me that practice makes perfect, and if I am not practicing, I cannot ever become perfect even if I wanted to. So true! If you are struggling with any part of your business, or with motivation, please, please, please join us on Monday mornings for the Breakout Sessions.

Another amazing resource is the archives here, as I listen to all of these successful WAHMs tell their stories, it is VERY evident that they didn’t know what they were doing in the begining, they just tried it. Sometimes they were on the wrong path, but that didn’t stop them, they just kept trying to see what works. Eventually they found their path.

If you are just starting out and need to be motivated, really focus on the begining parts of the story, because you too are the begining part of your story! Not one woman is all of these 259 (as of this writing) podcasts started their business “perfectly”. They made mistakes and grew and learned from them. We cannot be successful until we make our own mistakes and learn from them.

So goodbye perfectionism.

We are bidding you a not-so-fond farewell. We are no longer listening to your nagging thoughts, we are letting go the self doubt and we are saying you are soooooo 2008.

I think perfectionism can be just as unhealthy as not focusing at all! You don’t have to be perfect mama!

So true Angie, perfectionism robs us from being a productive business person and being a good mama. No one wants a perfect mama – i think you need to learn even parents make mistakes. :)
