Weirauch Wins SBA Michigan Award!

Ortonville, Michigan – Carrin Weirauch, Owner of Down To Earth Toys of Ortonville, has been named the 2009 Michigan Home-Based Business Champion of the Year by the U.S. Small Business Administration.   Down To Earth Toys is a Web-based retailer of wooden, natural, and educational toys.

Carrin’s home-based business (www.DownToEarthToys.com) was born out of necessity.  In 2007, she noticed that a large number of children’s toys that were made in China were being recalled due to excessive lead levels.  Like many parents, Weirauch was becoming increasingly conscious of the country of origin and was looking for an alternative to foreign-made toys.  She decided to launch a Web site where consumers could locate American made toys that contain environmentally sound components such as wood and/or natural fibers.

“Carrin took her idea to find a better, safer toy for her child and developed it into a thriving home-based business,” said Richard Temkin, SBA Michigan District Director.  “Her commitment to selling safer, American-made products is commendable.  I am pleased to announce Carrin Weirauch as the winner of SBA’s 2009 Michigan Home-Based Business Champion of the Year.”

Carrin has received valuable help from the SBA with marketing, inventory management, web site design, accounting, and business planning.  Carrin is active with the local La Leche League chapter, and Attachment Parenting groups, where she delivers talks on the value and promotion of American-made toys, toy safety, and home-based business.

Carrin received her Michigan award during the fifth annual Michigan Celebrates Small Business awards ceremony in East Lansing, Michigan, on April 30, 2009.
