Working at Home

theblogtutorialIf you have been wanting to start a blog on your own domain using WordPress but are intimidated (or shaking in the corner), I feel your pain. It sounds so overwhelming – domains, FTP, templates and plugins. If you have left your blog on Blogger because you have been scared to move to your own site, there is a great product that will walk you through the process, step by step. No more excuses for staying on Blogger!!

Susan Whitehead (WAHM of 5) has created a series of 9 videos called The Blog Tutorial that will walk you (yes, even the brand spankin’ newbie) right through the entire process. Susan’s teaching style is really easy to follow, she goes slowly and you can actually see what to do and how to do it on the screen (hint – pause the video and then do the step yourself for the easiest results).

Video 1 shows you how to choose a web hosting company, Video 2 covers selecting and registering a domain name, Video 3 will help you to set up your email on your new web host. Video 4 shows the good stuff – how to actually set up WordPress on your new hosting accounting, Video 5 talks about WordPress themes – where to find them and how to install them, Video 6 covers the goodness that are WordPress plugins.

The last three videos will take your blog to the next step, Video 7 discusses ways to monetize your blog, Video 8 has lots of great tips about the look, traffic and more and Video 9 covers how to set up a blog newsletter.

Throughout the videos you will learn how to FTP and all sorts of other tricks – you’ll be a pro in no time! The videos are available to stream online or you can download them on your computer. They are quite large files so if space is an issue, I recommend streaming them. It is best to stream them if you have a Mac – I tried about a billion programs, but couldn’t get them to work. The bonus of Cloaker Buzz software looks really cool, but I haven’t tried it, as it is PC only. Cloaking your links is always a smart idea, and Susan does a great job explaining why.

The Blog Tutorial videos were created in the previous version of WordPress, but that should not stop you from purchasing the video series. With WordPress 2.7 it is now even easier to manage plugins, but it is still important to know how to install them the old-fashioned way. You will be able to figure your way around the new WordPress changes very easily. I think this is a great package for any WAHM looking to start her blog and the $47 price tag is very fair. The Blog Tutorial is as advertised – it will get you from absolute newbie to proud blog owner quickly and easily.
