Sick Days – Another Great Reason to be a WAHM

Did you ever work for a company that gave you a pre-determined amount of sick days?  How can you possibly know how many sick days you will take?  Especially if you have young children that like to share their illnesses around the family and don’t have any immunity to built up, so it seems like they are sick every other week.  And if you went over your sick days, you would have to use vacation days.  Whether you are sick, or you are taking care of a sick child – that is definitely not anyone’s version of “vacation”.

When you are a WAHM, you have unlimited sick days.  Not that you are not going to have to catch up on work when you feel better, but if your head is so congested it feels like the size of Japan, you can stay in your bed and rest your body so you will be on the mend quickly.  No guilt, no worrying that it is only March and you have already used up 3/4 of your sick day allowance, no feeling like you are wasting a sick day on yourself when you know your son gets sick far more often that you.

Being a WAHM gives you the flexibility to deal with life’s little emergencies as they come up and not give you added stress or guilt.  And that is, as they say, priceless!

What little emergencies have come up for you, that made you appreciate being a WAHM even more than you already do?

  1. It’s great to work at home if you are sick, your child is sick, or even your husband is sick! It’s nice to have that flexibility to table projects or tasks to work on later in the evening or the next day. I am grateful to be able to work at home, even with the stress that also accompanies it (and guilt at times)!! One thing I’ve found to be helpful is to always be ready to get some work done. My mobile phone has become a lifesaver if I need to email a client or access a file on my webtop. I can do it while sitting in the car waiting for an after school activity to get over, or while sitting through the pick up lane at the school!

I’ve had a terrible two weeks here at my house. My previously homeschooled daughter wanted to homeschool again after one semester of public high school. This has torn my schedule all apart. I’ve not been able to get on my computer till I was too tired, and got behind with my work. Now that we have another computer this week, I’m getting caught up! I am so grateful for the flexibility of being a WAHM.

  3. Gosh Kelly no need to rub it in (just kidding). Today I am actually sick and had to stay home from work. I get one sick day per month, isn’t that crazy and one vacation day per month. I am a new mom and my husband and I are the care takers of his mom. I so wish I worked from home.

Felicia – Sorry to hear you are under the weather and under stress :( So not fair to limit your sick days, especially with the heavy burden you are under.

I love that I don’t need to panic when it’s -35 outside and my car won’t start. I just say “Oh well, I guess I won’t go to Walmart today.” and curl up on the couch with a blanket and some hot tea. But nothing beats not having to call your boss and tell them you’re sick and make sure you cough and stuff (or tell them how many times you just threw up) so that they believe you. :-P
