On Monday Glennette Goodbread shared a guest post with us about 10 things you should ask yourself before starting a web design business. Today she’s going to share a post about one of the hottest topics around – blogging.
If you’re like so many other people who don’t blog on a regular basis (even though you know you should be), then you’re probably having one or both of these issues:
- You aren’t sure how to write an effective blog post.
- You don’t know how to write a post in a short amount of time.
Blogging shouldn’t be a chore.
That’s where the 22-minute blog post process can be a great help.
1. Look through your “swipe” file and pick a topic. A “swipe” file is simply a list you keep of potential topics you’ve made ahead of time by jotting down ideas as you have them. [1 minute]
2. Decide on your keyword phrase for this post for search engine optimization, and write your title including your primary keyword. [1 minute]
3. Put in the five (5) main bullet points you want to talk about on this topic. This is just the subject of that particular point, not the description or explanation. [2 minutes]
4. Write the introduction and limit it to three (3) sentences:
- Sentence #1. Identify the problem the person has on this topic. Ask about the problem in the form of a question. Use your primary keyword phrase in this sentence. [1 minute]
- Sentence #2. Provide some detail about the problem – e.g., why it occurs, why it happens to others, etc. [1 minute]
- Sentence #3. Explain what type of solution you’re going to give for the problem. [1 minute]
5. For each bullet point, write two sentences. Use your secondary keyword phrase in the first and fifth bullet points. Use your primary keyword phrase in the third bullet point. [10 minutes]
6. Write your closing in two sentences. In the first sentence, give a quick overview of how the bullet points provide the solution option(s). In the second – and final –sentence, include a “call to action” that will prompt the reader to implement the solution. [2 minutes]
7. Spell-check your post, then reread it for grammar, sentence structure, etc. [1 minute]
8. If desired, add an image. Something to note: Google gives higher ranking to pages that load faster. Thus, if you include an image, be sure the image size is as small as possible. [2 minutes]
There you have it! If you follow the process above, in 22-minutes you’ll have your blog post done. It will be about 425 words (the perfect length) and certain to draw visitors to your site (which is the whole point). Now, set aside that 22 minutes and get that blog post written and posted!

I love these tips. I guess I’ll have to start out with step one and keep an on-going Swipe file. When I read posts like this It sounds so simple – it is the discipline of consistency that I have problems with.
Sara, you are not alone. Life gets in the way sometimes. Starting at step one is a good idea. Spend 30 minutes to an hour one day building your swipe file. The next day work on keyword research. At first, you may want to double the amount of time and work your way toward taking less time. The point isn’t to write a post in 22 minutes. It’s to not spend an hour or more on a blog post. Keep us posted on how it goes!
