This is our last guest post from Aurelia Williams. She’s shared some great information this week that will help you in your work at home journey. Now she has some tips and tricks for organization and self-disciple, two of the most important aspects of working from home!
Working from home is a liberating experience. You do not have to follow someone else’s rules. You can create your own rules as you go along, rules that fit your lifestyle.
Self-discipline and organization are key to having a successful work from home career, especially if you are a wife and mother. Not only do you have to juggle your work responsibilities, you have to make plenty of time for your family. If you find yourself struggling with discipline and organization, there are ways to make things easier.
Organization
For organization, turn to the internet. There are many free websites and applications that can help you stay organized. You can find ones for simple to-do lists or ones for projects that are more complex. You can keep track of your time, your contracts and just about any other thing you can think of. There are also free programs and sites that help you keep track of your income and expenses.
If you are an independent contractor, these kinds of sites are particularly helpful for tax purposes. If none of the programs appeal to you, you can open a blank document or spreadsheet and create your own list. The point is being able to keep track of every project and deadline. You want to be able to tell at a glance what you need to do each day.
Self-Discipline
Once you have yourself organized, it is time to focus on your self-discipline. Many people do not realize the amount of dedication it takes to successfully work out of your home. If you are not disciplined, you could end up not earning the money you need. Self-discipline starts by creating a reasonable schedule and sticking to it.
Working from a computer gives you constant access to all of your favorite websites. There are different browser extensions that will limit the amount of time you can be on these sites. You can also try rewarding yourself. Work for a specified amount of time. Then give yourself fifteen minutes of free time to browse the web. Then, work again. You can treat yourself to television time or a snack. Find your motivation and use it to your advantage to discipline yourself.
