Working at Home

Welcome back to the series, Things You Should Consider Before Starting To Work At Home.  Today we will be discussing the benefits of social media for WAHMs.

Are you tweeting?  Are you on Facebook?  Are you on LinkedIn?  Are you on Myspace?

Social networks are a great place to promote yourself or your business.

One of the biggest tools of your trade when you are working at home is networking.  You will be surprised at what you have at your finger tips.  It is said that everyone is six degrees of separation which means that you are at most six steps away from any person on Earth. Let’s think about how that affects you.  So if you are looking for a job more than likely you know someone who knows someone who could give you that step into the doorway.

For example, let’s say that you want a position with Barnes and Nobles, you know Betty who works for Proctor and Gamble.  Betty knows Sally who is the HR Director of Proctor and Gamble.  Sally knows Jeff who works for Norton’s Telecommunication.  But Jeff knows Paul who works for Barnes and Nobles.  And Paul knows Joe who is the HR Manager of Barnes and Nobles.  All you have to do is talk to your friend Betty who will talk to her friend, Sally will talk to her friend and so on.

So who do you know that can help you get a foot up?

There are several different kinds of social media networks that are available to you.

Ones that I recommend since you are trying to work from home are:

LinkedIn – This is a professional network where you can bring your work experience to the table like setting up a resume.  There are job tips, job listings, career tips and etc.  It’s free to join and great to connect with others.  One of the things that I like about this site is that you can get professional recommendations from previous co-workers or employers.  What better why to get hired by someone?  They can see your references right up front.

Facebook –  This is more of a social group to network with friends, family members, and acquaintance.

Twitter – This is a social network where you can connect with friends, and co-workers.  You can, also, use this to promote your site.

Myspace – This is a well known social site that’s still popular with the younger set.  You can promote yourself and your product to views daily.

On all of these sites, you can share pictures that you would like.  I do like to mention that you should be aware that future employers and/or companies are now searching the internet for information on future employees.  For instance, Jack from Lyndon’s is getting ready to hire Matt Jones.  He goes out to the internet and he finds a website where Matt Jones is talking about burning flags.  Jack’s company is very patriotic.  Jack changes his mind about Matt Jones because of this website because he feels now that he found this website that Matt Jones does not fit his company anymore.

This is really important to remember – Anything that you put on the internet can be found later on.  Be careful with what you put out there.

I hope that you enjoyed the series.

    Hi Tami
    Thankyou for this post
There are so many social media networks available to promote yourself, I find it can be a little overwhelming. I wonder if alot of wahms use linkedIn. I don't hear much about that one.

    Tami,
You're right about how social media connects you. I have a LinkedIn profile that I don't use much. But it regularly sends me updates of how people I'm connected to are connecting to other people. I really need to look into LinkedIn. I think it would be good for WAHMS providing any type of service-web design, consulting, copywriting.
