Does an Affiliate Manager Need any Type of Formal Training?

Training is not a requirement to become an affiliate manager. It's not mandatory but training is always helpful.

Being an affiliate manager requires experience in different areas. An affiliate manager that has no experience in the affiliate management position might be very knowledgeable when it comes to tasks associated with the position due to their understanding of websites or other online experience.

Even if a person isn't familiar with an affiliate program they can still be a great affiliate manager because of other skills they posses.

An affiliate manager should at least be knowledgeable in these areas:

Basic Web Skills

Basic web skills will be needed to be a good affiliate manager. Someone with advanced skills is optimal but basic skills will work too. The reason at least basic skills are needed is because although they may not be in charge of managing the website there may be times when they need to add files to the site or change content relating to the affiliate program.

Recruiting Affiliates

It is actually very easy to find potential affiliates. An affiliate manager can find them by looking at websites that offer complementary products and services to the one(s) that they are an affiliate manager for.

After doing some research and finding the sites that offer complementary products and services to the affiliate program they are promoting all they need to do is contact the site owner. A simple email asking if they would consider becoming an affiliate will suffice.

Motivating Affiliates

Once affiliates have been recruited by the affiliate manager it doesn't stop there. It's up to the affiliate manager to motivate them to get out there and promote the product. This can be done by contests, incentives, emails, etc.

Writing Skills

This isn't something that most people come by naturally. You'll find that most affiliates are going to rely on the affiliate manager to provide them content in the forms of blog posts, articles, reports, etc that they can use to promote the product(s). If the affiliate manager isn't comfortable with their writing skills you can always outsource this but the manager should still be able to tell good writing from bad writing and be able to do some writing on their own.

Email Marketing

The basics of email marketing need to be understood by the affiliate manager. They'll need to use email marketing to communicate with their affiliates to learn what the affiliates need and want. You'll find that most affiliates will use this type of marketing to promote the programs they are an affiliate for. Having emails that are ready to use and even some ecourses for your affiliates will help them in their marketing efforts.

It only makes sense that training for an affiliate manager would first come through being an affiliate. Sign up to be an affiliate for several different programs. This way you can check out what types of affiliate resources they offer.

While researching the programs you are signed up for as an affiliate be sure to take lots of notes. This will help keep things fresh in your mind so that you can implement the ideas you have.
